History and Introduction

The process of Rotational Molding or just Rotomolding is one the process to form hollow shapes from plastic materials. This industry was developed almost 150 years ago (1855). This process was first used to mold semi-liquid metal substances by means of some simple types of machines. Polyvinylchloride (PVC) was the first polymer used in this industry (like many other technologies to form plastic materials). It happened in the 1930s.
After the 2nd world war and in the late of 1950s, producing polyethylene powder and using it instead of liquid resins and developing hot-air circulation ovens were the two important events created a revolution in this industry.

In the middle of 1970s, the linear low density polyethylene came into production circle. In 1980s polyamide, polypropylene, and polycarbonate came into the production circle. In respect to the consumption, as the polyethylene showed off very various qualities, it could precede the other polymers so that nowadays more than 80% of products manufactured through rotomolding are produced by raw- materials of polyethylene. The products are: tanks for storing water, fuels, and chemicals products, tubs used in fishery and industries, toys, barrels for packing, floating jetties, road barriers, etc. As no scientific and systematic researches were done in the rotomolding products used in Iran markets, it is hard to judge in this area. However, the following graphs indicate the

The first rotomolding company was founded in Iran in 1974. The machineries which were bought from a Norwegian company were operated with the capacity of 300 tons a year in 1977. This company mostly manufactured plastic tanks and tubs. In 1992, the first rotomolding machine with an electrical heating system was made by the present managing director of the Tabarestan Plastic Complex, Mr. Mohammad-Ali Golestani. In 1994, he designed and developed the first rotomolding machine using fossil fuel. This event opened a great development in this industry because of the cheap and abundant fossil fuels in Iran and caused the development of this industry to speed up. Because of his more than 25 years constant and effective presence in developing this industry, he is considered as the Father of Rotomolding Industry in Iran.
In 1998 the first production line of Tabarestan Plastic Complex started. In 2006, TPC imported a very advanced rotomolding machine to Iran from a valid company in the world. In 2009, the first rotational molding machine with an automatic control system and moveable oven was designed and built by the technical staff of TPC and was registered as the first patent in the area of manufacturing rotomolding machineries in Iran. In 2010 XLPE was used in the rotomolding production line for the first time in Iran by TPC and was registered as the first patent in the area of manufacturing rotomolding products in Iran. Nowadays, production capacity of all active Iranian companies in this industry is more than 20000 tons a year.
